The Black School's Principles and Questions

by THE BLACK SCHOOL

This excerpt of Principals and Questions from The Black School (TBS) Process Deck are currently being used as focus points for our current TBS: Design Studio Apprenticeship cohort's Reading Group Curriculum. The 5 apprentices ages 17-22 chose these principals themselves. The questions are used to interrogate the principals and advance ideations for applying/amplifying them in the world. Our Apprentices are using these principles and questions to help focus their exploration of written works, visual art, poetry, documentaries and hip hop created by Black authors, activists, poets, artists and rappers but they can be applied broadly by readers of the Creative Time Think Tank.

The Black School

The Black School is an experimental art school teaching Black and people of color students and allies to become agents of change, founded by Joseph Cuillier III and Shani Peters in 2016. Their mission is to promote and extend the legacy of art in Black radical histories by providing innovative education alternatives centered in Black love. They have held over 100 workshops on radical Black politics and public interventions that address local community needs, serving over 400 students, and also produced three Black Love Fests, collaborated with more than 40 professional artists, and partnered with over 50 organizations.
